Leveraging Opportunities As Students
What’s a bigger flex than being a scholar in and outside school?
One exciting thing about life is that YOU can be multifaceted. You can engage in lots of activities and do as many things as you’re interested in.
Over the years, we’ve witnessed a switch in this aspect. In those days, there used to be the stereotype that straight-A students never engaged in extracurricular activities. For example, if you wanted to be an A+ student, getting involved in extracurricular activities like sports, dancing, and the like was like a waste of time. If they didn’t involve quizzes, debates, or just school-related activities, then you weren’t supposed to be there as an ‘efiko’.
In those days, how did you tell your parents/guardians that you were interested in joining the school’s drama team? Or dancing was your hobby, and you’d like to take dancing classes? (With which mouth?💀). The response you’d get would instantly make you lose interest in any non-academic activities.
These days, I’ve seen cases where people have excelled in both academics and non-academics. I recall a story of one of my older siblings, who is an aeronautical engineer and also doing well as a fashion designer. Both are separate professions requiring different skill sets, but they’re doing them well! I’m sure we all know of Jemima Osunde, a Physiotherapist and an Actress! To name a few, I’m sure there are many more!
This is not a ploy to downplay academics; the point is to show that you can pursue that hobby or hone that skill while being a student. Academics definitely play a great role in our progress and development, but if you have other interests aside from academics, don’t let your talent go to waste.
It is also important to note that education is not limited to formal schooling. Lifelong learning is crucial for individuals of all ages. It enables personal and professional growth, enhances skills, and promotes adaptability in an ever-changing world. Engaging in some extracurricular activities is a means of education, and education is an essential component of personal and societal development. So, why not, since it’s all education?
If you’re looking to get involved in extracurricular activities, these tips may be helpful:
You could join a club or community that aligns with your interests, attend networking events, etc. It's an excellent way to meet new people and professionals and build meaningful relationships and connections with people of similar interests?🤭. Speaking of attending events, don’t forget about ECX Grand Finaleeeeee 🤭💃💃.
Volunteering for organizations is incredibly rewarding! Look for volunteering opportunities that match your skill set and make a difference in your community, like volunteering for ECX in the next edition 😉.
Take part in seminars and workshops to expand your knowledge about different topics. Thanks to the internet, you can look up these events with just a few clicks.
You can also leverage the countless opportunities we present to you at our grand finale.
The event is going to be elaborate, and you don’t want to miss your chance to network, the panel sessions, and outstanding opportunities from our partner organizations.
(If you know what is good for you, hurry here and come and roll with the big guys at our finale!😉), themed “Next-Gen Leaders: Driving The Technological Revolution,” which will take place on August 6, 2024, at the J. F. Ade Ajayi Auditorium, University of Lagos.
That being said, if you feel the need to explore, explore. Education goes way beyond bagging excellent grades at your school. You could even get a part-time job to develop new skills and make some cool cash!
In doing all these, remember to set clear goals and reflect on your experiences to ensure what you’re doing aligns with your overall career and personal growth. The key is to explore different activities and find what resonates with you the most.
Also, take initiative and don’t wait for opportunities to come to you; actively seek them out and create your own. Extracurricular involvement can boost your resume while you’re a student!
