How many cartons of spaghetti is your laptop worth?
ICYMI, read our previous newsletter here.
Fun fact: this year is a leap year, so babies born on the 29th of February 2020 can finally turn one! 🎊
I guess it would not be a warm write-up if I did not start by welcoming you back from the holidays. Hurray! You made it here, and we're already two weeks into 2024.👏🏾
Being midway into the “longest” month of the year, if you're anything like me, reality has started to hit. After all the partying and spending of the festive, or in your case, “detty” December, pockets are drying up, and you can't wait for the first salary of the year to hit. That's where I come in with a well-proven strategy to secure your meals for the rest of the month.
A carton of spaghetti currently goes for just over #20,000. Assuming your laptop cost anywhere around #200,000, that's 10 cartons secured. If it were #300,000, 15 cartons. I'm sure you get the hang of it.😉 You and your guys are sorted for the rest of the month. How will you work for the rest of the month? Don't worry about that now. After all, “nah who dey alive dey work”.
Well, with that, I guess meals are sorted for the month 🍝
UNILAG 54th Convocation Ceremony
ECX would like to take this opportunity to extend heartfelt Congratulations to all graduates of the University of Lagos' 54th Convocation Ceremonies. We can't wait to see you soar and accomplish amazing things both locally and globally.
Just do it- The Origin Story.
I believe we’ve all agreed to ‘not gree for anybody’ this year but are aware that this includes you. How? Sometimes, we are the ones hindering our progress, hesitant and afraid of putting our legs outside our shells. We would rather peep through the slice of light from the darkness of our shell and watch what we could achieve from afar.
Let me take you back to the late '80s when Nike was on the lookout for a new campaign. Dan Wieden, faced with the challenge, found himself in a brainstorming session with Nike executives. Amid the chaos, he recalled the last words of a convicted murderer, Gary Gilmore, executed in 1977: "Let's do it." Wieden transformed this grim inspiration into the globally recognized slogan, 'Just Do It.' This spontaneous idea became a phenomenon, emphasizing the transformative power of seizing opportunities without hesitation.
Now, let me share a personal tale that echoes the 'Just Do It' philosophy. Picture me, someone who typically shies away from group chats, questioning life decisions during an involuntary school break. In a bold move, I messaged a CEO on Instagram after witnessing his employees praising him. The impulsive act led to a job opportunity, propelling me into an internship at a prestigious company. Stepping out of my comfort zone opened doors to brand campaigns I could never have imagined.
As I reflect on this journey, I want to pass on the courage to 'just do it' in various aspects of life. Embracing spontaneity and taking daring chances has been transformative for me. So, as we embark on this journey together, stay tuned for upcoming tips and insights gained from my adventures in trying new things without overthinking.
Now, you might be wondering, “How can I do this?”
First, most times, it’s the fear of failure. Take it or leave it. Underestimating your ability or potential. But wait, if you don’t try, how will you know? Don’t deplete your motivation and determination before you even start. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Sometimes, it’s necessary.
The second one is procrastination. My goodness! I saw this meme somewhere where someone said their parents didn’t raise a quitter, but they raised a procrastinator, and I was like, ‘real.’ Most times, what stops me from just doing it is I’ll bookmark something to apply or read later and totally forget to do it. Or churning out shabby work when I could have done better or missing deadlines altogether because I kept postponing till the deadline. We’re stopping this, hopefully, and we’re not postponing. We’re setting our goals and getting them this year.
That’s all I have for now because I’m taking baby steps. Intentional baby steps because I’m going to move more out of my comfort zone this year. I’m going to just do it. While we wrap this up, ECX Soft Skills training is presently ongoing. Apply here. Surround yourself with a supportive community of fellow learners, mentors, and resources that can provide guidance and encouragement along your journey.
This year, let’s do it. I’m rooting for us. ❤️
